NAME OF THE ORGANISATION:Natural Resources Conservation Organization(NRCO)

Our Vision

NRCO( formerBURANTEAM)is a Non-profit Institution, that committed to reduce the poverty through the empower community understanding of local resource management.

MISSION STATEMENT

Natural Resources Conservation Organization (NRCO) has envision that our target zone will be remained under a diversified sustainable resource that lead them to be healthy and economically secure through providing awareness, demonstration and trainings.


Introduction:

The Natural Resource Conservation Organization (Ex-Buran Team) is non governmental organization established in 2000 by group of intellectuals that has been inclusively involved the environmental conservation and community serving .these members have unified their human resources to form this environment organization. The NGO Joined to Resource Management Somalia Network (RMSN)the year of 2000.

Since the establishment of the x Buran Team (Now N R C O ), some activities has accomplished at target communities that physically changed the community believes and practices about the land management and preservation. The main sector areas of the organization are detailed in below:

  • Environmental control
  • Both formal and informal education development,
    Health development
  • Infrastructure improvement,
  • Human right awareness creation,
  • Reduction of violence against women through education,
  • Girl-child advocacy for education and other cultural based injustice that infringes her rights.
  • Advocate primary health care projects to improve the quality of life and human dignity.
  • Improve basic sanitation, and hygiene.
  • Awareness raising on HIV/AIDS targeting women and youth.

During working with the target communities, the NGO has experienced some form of environmental crisis such as:

  • Lack of rangeland management
  • Overgrazing
  • Soil erosion forms
  • Charcoal burning
  • Grass cutting for commercial purposes
  • Wildlife extinction
  • Rangeland degradation
  • Gullies formation
  • Climate changes
  • Biodiversity loss
  • Reduction of water quantity and availability
  • Growing energy consumption and challenges.

On 25th May 2005 both the Board of Directors and Executive Management has reviewed both the geographic coverage and the name of the NGO. The members agreed with the below points:

  • That the name of the institution changed into NRCO Effective from 01.06.05
  • That the geographic coverage of the institution extended to all punt land state of Somalia .

Type of Organization: Is voluntary/ Non-profit organization

NGO Believes:

The organization belief that the people are equal value and have the same rights but born in to inequality circumstances and opportunity that can be changed.

NGO OBJECTIVES

  • To improve quality of life of the community through the promotion of productivity and production system that are sustainable.
  • To work with local communities and encourage management practices that conserves the natural resources.
  • To increase public environmental awareness and advocacy through training, meetings, media etc.
  • To generate environmental data base and share information within the target communities.
  • To explore alternative energy sources that is environmental friendly.
  • To support communities in resolving resources based conflicts.
  • To monitor and document environmental changes in the organization’s coverage areas.
  • Develop comprehensive standards, guidelines and protocols to address priority environment and heritage protection issues
  • Promote community understanding and participation in addressing key challenges associated with environment and heritage protection;
  • Support participation of Indigenous peoples in environment and tradition protection;
  • Join with other environmental organization at district and regional level and other bodies on matters relevant to the activities to ensure environment protection.
  • Pursuing eco-efficiency and conservation of natural resources, including energy use diversification.

Board of Directors (B.o.D.)

The Board of directors (B.o.D.) of the NGO is the legislative body of the organization and is responsible for:
Policy making

  • Approval of the yearly plans and budgets.
  • Review of the organizational policies.
  • Recruitment of the NGO key members
  • Ensure that the NGO goals are achieved.
  • Regularly asses the organization achievements and evaluate the causes of the failures.
  • Executive committee

This organs is the executors and manage the NGO programs, they are responsible day to day program activities of the NGO. The activities of the bodies are detailed in below:

  • Directing, planning, organizing and controlling of the organization’s physical, human, financial and information resources of different parties of the organization’s sectors.
  • Ensuring that the organizational policies and strategies of development.
  • Conduct regular monitoring and evaluation on organization’s programs.
  • Recruit the project staff.
  • Prepare yearly budget plans.
  • Propose possible human resource development.
  • Working experience of the NRCO:

Since the establishment of the organization, the NGO has experienced more aspects related to its different mandated activities. The below table were summarized the organization past experience:

The General Assembly
The General Assembly (AGM) is the highest authority of the organization that met 2 times a year. During this meeting, the participants review the B.o.D. members and then the board of directors select executive committee that include chairman, and Program manager

NETWORKS AND AFFILIATIONS:

The team has nearer relations and linkages to the below organizations:

  • All member organization of the Resource Management Somalia Network (RMSN)
  • WAWA Network.
  • Puntland Food Security.
  • DAN-DOR Local NGO
  • SHAFI’I Local NGO.
  • Sanag Student Association (SSA)

SOURCE OF FUNDING:


Since the establishment of the organization, the NGO gets supports from the Network and community. Also the NGO is expecting to get diversified funds from abroad i.e. both international community (Donors) and authority.

NTERVENTIONS IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SECTOR:

  • Provide awareness to the target communities such as; Buran village, Kala-dhacda, B/busle, Kaam sagaar, Ceel-Lahelay.
  • Conduct community training with environmental Holistic Resource management principles.
  • Set up a demonstration sites by each village one.
  • Participate the charcoal campaign at Sool Plateau.
  • Conduct Baseline data collection at all Team sites.
  • Participate meetings since 2000.

The Geographical coverage:
The organization coverage is Sanag region of Somalia. The mandated areas are:

  • Environmental protection
  • Social services
  • Awareness raising
  • Human right ad vocation
  • HIV/AIDS reduction.
SN Activities mandated Lessons learned
1 Community awareness Pastoral community has a traditional environment protection, and awareness will remember them to their parent's inherited.
2 Community trainings: Trainings conducted to the community show a low adoption.
3 Demonstration It is the real role play that increase the community understanding in the HRM principle application
4 Charcoal burning Inclusively, the community both villagers and pastoralists know the risks of the charcoal burning, but lack of job opportunities are join to burn the forest
5 Illiterate and community violence The religious and traditional believes on girl's education can be changed by awareness and mobilization
